If you have not yet been involved in a collision between a motorist and a bicyclist, now is a great time to learn how to avoid it. These are a few situations and ways in which motorists and bicyclists often collide:

  • Controlled Intersections: At an intersection where the flow of traffic is controlled by signs or traffic lights, it is not unlikely for a motorist to pull forward and collide with a bicycle, even though the cyclist has the right of way. To prevent this sort of collision, motorists should slowly and cautiously approach controlled intersections, be aware of all signals and lights in place, and only proceed once it is clear that you have the right of way.
  • Overtaking and Sideswiping: Lack of appropriate distance between motor vehicles and bicycles can cause the bicyclist to be hit or knocked over. It can also cause bicyclists to overcorrect to avoid a collision with a vehicle that is driving too close and cause the cyclist to collide with another vehicle, person, or object.
  • Opening Doors: When drivers do not look for bicyclists before opening doors into an active travel lane, cyclists can run into the door, swerve into another vehicle, be thrown from their bike, or otherwise endangered of serious injury. When parking your car near an active travel lane, be sure to check your surroundings for approaching bicyclists before opening your doors. It is also helpful to shut your car doors as soon as possible.
  • Left Turns at Intersections: Since bicyclists are often difficult to spot at intersections, be sure to always check the oncoming lane and your blind spots before making left turns across an oncoming travel lane.

If you have been involved in a collision with a bicyclist, don’t wait to call Rosenberg & Rosenberg, P.A. put our experienced legal team on your side. We’re here to help secure your best possible outcome.
