The Associate Press reports that a construction worker who was part of the new Minnesota Viking’s stadium fell an approximate 50 feet and died on the jobsite August 26 and another worker was seriously injured.The construction worker, who worked for Berwald Roofing Co., was apparently only about 45 minutes into his shift when he fell from the edge of the roof into a snow gutter and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, according to the Senior Vice President of Mortenson Construction, John Wood.“This is a very tragic day in the life of the stadium construction project,” Wood related at a news conference. No one was available to comment on the fatality from Berwald Roofing. The company has received several citations due to safety violations at its worksites over the last five years. Many of these warnings stemming from workers who failed to use safety harnesses.
The roughly 1,200 men and women working on the more than $1 billion project were left idle the rest of the day, with Wood reporting they held “a very somber gathering” after the accident. Work picked up again the next day with a grief counselors on site.
The Vikings released a statement calling the death “extremely sad” and offered the family their thoughts and prayers as well as for the other injured worker in the hospital.
