Understanding the Prevalence of Truck Crashes
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that in 2020, there were 145,187 truck crashes reported. Out of those, 4,519 people died, and 67,693 people sustained injuries in the U.S. Even though truck crashes saw a decline compared to 2019, truck crashes are still far too common on U.S. roads. Here’s why truck accidents occur.
Safety Violations
Even with safety protocols in place, the FMCSA consistently cites violations after conducting safety inspections on truck fleets. The following are the most common violations recorded by the FMCSA:
- Moving violations (speeding, reckless driving, improper turns).
- Failing to use a seatbelt while driving.
- Using hand-held mobile devices while driving.
- Unauthorized passengers on board.
- Driving under the influence of drugs.
- Driving while in possession of alcohol (non-cargo).
- Driver failing to conduct a pre-trip inspection.
- Falling/improperly placing warning devices.
Truck Accident Injury Facts
According to 2019 data collected by the National Safety Council (2019), large trucks accounted for 10% of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes. Here are some other findings:
- The majority of truck-crash deaths were occupants of other vehicles (71%).
- Truck occupants accounted for 18% of truck crash fatalities.
- Pedestrian and bicyclists accounted for 11% of truck crash deaths.
- Most fatal truck crashes occurred during the daytime (64.12%) compared to nighttime (35.88%).
- September had the most truck-related fatalities at 456, followed by October at 432 deaths and July at 410.
Florida Truck Crash Stats
The FMCSA reports the following 2020 crash data relating to truck accidents on Florida roads:
- Total truck crashes: 8,147
- Total fatalities: 276
- Total injuries 3,839
Florida truck accidents declined from 2019. However, there is still much work to do in keeping the numbers down and all motorists safer.
